The Film Connection

Introduction

FILM CONNECTION

With locations in nearly every city in America, the Film Connection Film School is in a unique position to train you as a professional filmmaker near where you live. We place you as an apprentice (extern) in an actual film production company to be trained one-on-one by a professional filmmaker who becomes your local mentor. Not only will you learn the technical aspects of directing, cinematography, editing and more, but you'll also gain valuable on-the-job experience, as well as the opportunity to gain the insider access and make connections that are so necessary to have a successful career in film. At the Film Connection, we have one primary purpose: to help new, aspiring film industry hopefuls gain the training, experience, and connections they need to break into the business. We're not here just to teach you the skills: we're here to help you launch your career. We're committed to your success. Do you need prior experience to be a Film Connection student? No, you don't. Some of our students have prior film experience; many others don’t. Our curriculum is flexible enough to accommodate your needs, whether you're a newbie or a veteran in the film business. We get your foot in the door while helping you take your skills to the next level.

THE SECRET INGREDIENT: MENTORSHIP

What is our secret? It's actually no secret at all, although it's not talked about much by other film schools. The secret is mentorship. Almost every successful professional in the film business, regardless of their schooling or experience, can point to at least one mentor who helped them along. Mentoring has been a key part of the film industry for as long as the industry itself has been around, and before film schools existed, it was the only way to get into the film industry. Even today, there's no better way to learn the ropes or get established in the film than to work one-on-one with a real working film professional. Classroom instruction can teach you some skills, but it can't actually connect you to the industry. A mentor, however, can. This is why at the Film Connection, the mentor-apprentice (extern) method is the bedrock of our whole program. How does mentoring work? If you're looking to be a producer, we pair you with a producer to learn one-on-one. If you want to be a director, we pair you with a seasoned director. If you want to be a screenwriter, we pair you with a successful screenwriter. You get the idea: with our program, you are mentored and taught by someone who is successfully doing the job you want to be doing in the film. The goal here is simple: by placing you as an apprentice (extern) with a mentor in a real production company, we enable you to get the training, the work experience and the connections you need in order to get a job in the industry when you graduate.

A SAFETY NET

As effective as our training approach is, we know that in this business, nothing is a sure thing. While many of our students get hired as soon as they graduate (and even before), there's no guarantee that a job will be waiting for you when you graduate. You need a safety net—a support network already in place when you need it. That's why the Film Connection has set up a job placement program that is second to none. Simply put, if by the time you graduate the program, you haven't been hired by your mentor or by a connection you've made in the course of your training, we'll help you find work. We equip you with the tools you need to put your best foot forward, we scour our network of connections for every film job opening we can find, and we help you apply for them. This safety net is in place if you need it for up to a full year after you graduate. Why do we do all this? Simple: at the Film Connection, our goal is not to take your money, teach you some skills and turn you loose. Our goal is to help you get your film career off the ground. That's why we go the extra mile for you.

OUR COMMITMENT TO AFFORDABLE EDUCATION

It's not unusual for film schools to charge upwards of $50,000 or more in tuitions, and our one-on-one mentor-apprentice (extern) approach is easily valued at least that much, if not more. But at the Film Connection, we are committed to keeping your costs down so you are not burdened with crippling amounts of debt when you graduate. That's why we limit the cost of our programs to $9,800 (books, materials, and software included). We keep our tuition low so you can actually afford to go to school and get on with your career without having to pay your student loans for years after you graduate.
