The Photography School of the IEFC offers photography studios providing the necessary training to those people looking for a professional outlet, a means of artistic expression, or some knowledge that will help them in their activity.

The School is an important reference in the teaching of Photography at a European level . More than 15,000 students have passed through its classrooms, many of them are dedicated to professional photography , be it in its artistic, academic, cultural, business or service aspects.

About us?

The Institut d'Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya is a non-profit Cultural Association , with the entity philosophy at the service of the public.

The year 2010 was awarded with the distinction of Entity of honor by the Catalan Federation of Photography.

The mission of the IEFC is to encourage, stimulate and promote the study, research and dissemination of photography.

The Institut d'Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya has been working for 40 years in the training and promotion of photographers , and in the conservation and dissemination of photographic heritage . Our project is to work to be more competitive in the knowledge and information society, where the image has a relevant role.

As a non-profit entity , all income generated by the IEFC itself reverts to the services it offers, some of which are free and open to the general public . The commitment of the human team of the IEFC together with the collaboration of the entities and people that have accompanied us in our projects, have allowed us to get to where we are now.

The IEFC is organized into three departments:


School Department

Offers photography lessons for people looking for professional training or a means of artistic expression.

Department of Documentation and Research

Preserves, manages and disseminates the existing documentation on photography, as well as the photographic heritage of Catalonia. It offers services open to the public of Library, Historical Photo Archive and Photo Library.

Department of Cultural Activities

It disseminates and promotes photography as a cultural event, through the organization and participation in exhibitions, conferences and other training activities (workshops, initiation courses in photography, etc.).

History of the IEFC

The Institut d'Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya (IEFC) was founded in 1972 by Miquel Galmes i Creus (1937-2015), who was director until 2012 and president until 2015.

Since 2012, Eduard Bertran is the director of the IEFC, and he is also the president since 2016.
