Lucca is famous for its intact city walls dating from the XV-XVII century. The walls have a perimeter of about 4,5 km around the historical nucleus of the city and this makes Lucca one of the 4 capital provinces of Italy to have an intact circular wall (together with Ferrara, Grosseto and Bergamo). Consequently, even the monumental historical centre of the city has remained almost entirely intact in its original aspect, counting numerous prestigious architecture, like the over 100 medieval churches (consecrated or not), the towers, the bell towers and the monumental renaissance palaces of precious stylistic linearity.

The city also enjoys charming urban areas of which the most famous is certainly that of Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. Work of Architect Lorenzo Nottolini the Piazza is unique in its kind and founded on the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheatre.

The main route of the historical city centre is the narrow and medieval Via Fillungo, which unites the main business activities of the city.

Due to this historical-monumental wealth, it has recently been proposed to include Lucca’s historical centre in the list of UNESCO’s world heritage sites.
