Introduction
This course is based on textiles and fashion as an art form. Enthusiasm, creativity, originality and self-discipline are all important attributes required.
Commitment outside of lessons is crucial to success. You will be set regular independent work which will take the form of practical work, research and written work on artists, designers and craftspeople. This course will enable you to produce an incredibly varied and experimental portfolio of work based on a range of chosen starting points.
You will learn practically through a series of hands-on workshops exploring a range of decorative and constructed techniques such as machine embroidery, transfer printing, paper & fabric manipulation, silk paper making and weave and knit. You will also draw inspiration and understanding from both historical costume, multicultural textiles and contemporary fashion through guided research and presentations on artists, designers and craftspeople.
There will be at least one study visit to a gallery during the Autumn Term to enrich and inspire you. You will benefit from a well-resourced and experienced department with teachers and technical staff who are also practitioners in the field of textile art.
