Introduction
Oxford has a proud tradition of studying art, music, literature, philosophy, religion, history, and other related subjects. It has contributed immensely to our understanding of various aspects of human society and culture. Students will follow the footsteps of J. R. Tolkien, T. S. Eliot, Christopher Hitchens, Oscar Wilde, Emily Davison in learning and producing work related to arts and humanities.
This course aims to understand the music through notated scores and to critique that approach to better analyze how music works.
1) Techniques of Tonal Music – Introduction to the Western tonal tradition; through the arrangement, acquisition of basic harmonic skills at the keyboard, aural work, and writing music.
2) Music Analysis – Introduction to what makes music work through hands-on familiarity with various styles.
