This qualification covers workers who work as basic level massage therapists. It provides skills in therapeutic relaxation massage including basic health assessment and treatment and may be used by people working:

  • within a clinic or in their own clinic
  • in an aged care facility
  • in a health service
  • in a spa facility or
  • in a palliative care facility or hospital

Entry Requirements:

To ensure an appropriate learning opportunity, learners would need to demonstrate a capacity to undertake study at Certificate IV level, this can be demonstrated via the following:

  • Successful completion of Year 11 or the equivalent level of study or mature aged entry. For further information, see PP02 ASSESSING LEARNER'S QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND ENGLISH PROFICIENCY.
  • Minimum English level of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. Learners originating from student visa assessment levels 1 and 2 without the required IELTS score can undertake SCEI’s English Proficiency Test. For information on student visa assessment levels, refer to Department of Immigration and Border Protection website.
  • Applicant must be 18 years of age or above.

After achieving HLT40312 Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice, learners may undertake:

  • HLT50307 Diploma of Remedial Massage
  • HLT51612 Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled-Division 2 nursing)

Teaching Methods/Mode of Study

Classroom and self-directed learning, practical application in a simulated work environment, as well as work placement.


Students will be assessed through Written Assessment, Simulated Demonstration, Case Study, Portfolio, Work placement, Project and Activities throughout the course.

Credit Transfer

Credit transfer is a term used to identify a process of gaining recognition gained through a previous course or a unit of study. To be eligible for credit transfer the unit code of the unit already held needs to be exactly the same as the unit for which credit is being requested. A copy of an Academic Transcript would need to be certified by the student.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of prior learning provides students with an opportunity to have their current skills and knowledge recognised.These skills and knowledge may relate to units they are intending to study and as a result may exempt them from studying these units. However there is a cost related to RPL. The process requires students to gather evidence confirming their skills and knowledge and submitting to an assessor for assessment.

Language and Literacy Support

A Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Indicator is administered to individuals to assess if they need additional support during their studies and are able to cope with requirements of the course. Individuals that are identified as “at risk” and needing additional support will be offered a variety of options for either before or during the course of study on a group or one to one basis with the approval of the Academic Manager. If individuals applying to enrol in health or community services courses achieve below the required LLN level for the course, they are advised to enrol in English for Community Services or English for Health initially to improve language and literacy skills within the context of either community services or the health industry. On completion, the individual can then progress into a mainstream course of their choice.
